Human-Computer Interaction and User Experience
Research on the design and development of simplified, qualitative and usable user interfaces, interactions, functionalities and components of products, applications and services based on User-Centered, Participatory, Ability-based and Inclusive Design paradigms; flexible models and methods; and best-of-breed UX tools and guidelines.

User Modeling
Research for the definition of more inclusive and accurate user models driven by the theory of mind and individual differences. Introduce, design and evaluate models, methodologies and practices derived from the research areas of visual attention; intelligence and information processing; social, cognitive, learning and emotional processing; perception and preferences; motor skills; attention economy and affective computing.

Human-centred Artificial Intelligence
Research on the design and development of artificial intelligence algorithms and recommendation engines that consider the human-in-the-loop, to handle the increasing complexity of data structures and facilitate transparent, fair, explainable and unbiased access to the right data at the right time, intelligent support during exploration and reflective analytics for predictive and proactive actions.

Conversational Agents
Research on the design and maintenance of extended conversational human-centred agents (embracing the digital-ME concept, i.e., simulating the digital avatar of users) and the enhancement of their interaction behavior in a virtual network with intelligence (based on specific human aspects, e.g., personality traits). Establishing more stable and trustworthy relationships between agents, and discovering faster and more accurately information on requests. Delivered through unobtrusive reflective user interfaces that ensure a seamless interaction between the user and the agent, context-aware support and service continuity.

Adaptation and Personalization
Research on the design and implementation of usable and context-aware progressive intelligent (user) interfaces, operations and mechanisms that enable adaptive and personalized access on (mobile/ desktop) services and applications based on users’ models, goals and tasks. Special attention is placed on distinctive mapping rules and semantic associations; rule-/ case-based and fuzzy logic techniques; persuasive strategies and technologies for behavior change; and game-based or gamified elements, for improving motivation, concentration, learning and positive attitude during interaction.

Decentralized and Cloud-based Networks
Research on the definition of optimum decentralized scalable architectures and networks, whereby sensitive or private data is stored locally, being on users control at all times; and disseminated within small qualitative clusters without exposure to the entire virtual network or central control (servers or authorities). Thus, ensuring higher data privacy and security; better scalability, robustness and utilization of information and network resources; and optimization in time of the quality of information that is produced.
